Frontier Horizon Equine Learning Center (FHELC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equine-assisted services to individuals and communities in Teller County, Colorado.
Our Story
FHELC was founded by Stephanie Smith and Holly Fletcher, two women united by a shared vision to make equine-assisted services accessible in their community. Holly was inspired to explore adaptive riding after her daughter, Maddy, was born with arthrogryposis and hearing loss. Stephanie brought years of experience with equine-assisted programs, having been involved with nonprofit organizations since 2003 and working toward instructor certification. After meeting at church, the two quickly discovered their aligned passion and joined forces to bring FHELC to life.
Our Growth and Impact
FHELC began in January 2020, offering its first adaptive riding lessons from a modest barn in Holly’s backyard. With just one horse, one pony, and six clients, the program quickly gained traction—even amid pandemic restrictions.
In November 2021, FHELC moved into a 12,720-square-foot indoor equestrian facility located on a historic 126-acre ranch, featuring outdoor arenas and direct access to national forest trails.
In 2022, FHELC became a member center of PATH International, distinguishing itself as the only PATH-accredited facility within a 70-mile radius to offer six different types of Equine-Assisted Services.
By the end of 2023, FHELC had:
- Served over 350 clients
- Expanded to 12 therapy horses
- Formed partnerships with five local schools and numerous community organizations
Engaged more than 60 volunteers, who collectively contributed over 6,000 hours of service
