Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library
Founded in 1847, the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library stands as a beacon of continuous service and inclusion in Odessa, Delaware. As the state’s first free public library open to all, it was groundbreaking in welcoming women and children at a time when access to books was often limited. From its humble beginnings in the Old Academy Building to its current colonial-style facility on High Street, the library has remained dedicated to enriching the lives of local residents for over 175 years. Today, it houses a robust collection of nearly 55,000 items, including the notable Delaware Collection, and continues to grow as a vital educational and cultural resource.
As an independent nonprofit governed by a committed Board of Trustees, the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library operates with the support of local, county, and state funding, as well as community donations and fundraising efforts. As part of the New Castle County Library System, the library offers modern services to meet the evolving needs of the community including technology access, lifelong learning opportunities, and diverse programming for all ages. With a mission centered on free and equal access to information, the library remains a cornerstone of democratic engagement and lifelong discovery in Odessa and beyond.
