Blocks Stand And Greenhouse

The story of Blocks Stand and Greenhouse began back in 1923 when Albert and Mayme Block tied the knot and started their farming journey in Romulus, at the corner of Middlebelt and Eureka. Albert was proud to be the third generation farming this land, which initially spanned 40 acres of rich fields filled with crops, egg-laying chickens, and milk cows.

Mayme added a special touch to their farm by cultivating a greenhouse, where she could often be found sitting peacefully under a tree, selling seedlings by the spatula full alongside fresh milk, eggs, and other homegrown produce. Their traditional farmstead was not only a livelihood but a labor of love, raising three children: Allen, Eileen, and Alfred (known as Alfy). Alfy grew up helping his father sell their goods at the Western Market, where he met Hilda Tyer, the daughter of a nearby farmer in what is now Allen Park. Hilda became more than just Alfy’s sweetheart; she became his wife and trusted business partner in 1954.

Together, Alfy and Hilda transformed Blocks Stand from its rural farm beginnings into the thriving greenhouse and sales operation it is today. The barns and pastures gave way to a modern sales building and expanded greenhouse facilities. Alongside their children, James and Fred, they have continued to nurture and grow the family legacy, providing fresh, local produce and plants to the community for generations.
