It all started back in December 2014, when Tom Busch purchased a one-acre piece of land that held a quiet little cinder-block building, once part of a Southwestern Bell tower site. That tower had been destroyed in a storm back in the early '90s, and the building sat empty for decades. But Tom saw potential, and his vision of a local winery with a small-town vibe began taking shape. By August 2017, Cooley Bay Winery opened its doors.
In the early days, Tom was joined by his brother-in-law Mark, who brought a spark of energy, a passion for wine, and a whole lot of charm to the business. During the tough pandemic years, the story goes that Tom and Mark practically lived at the winery, serving up flatbread pizzas and delivering wine curbside just to keep the dream alive.
Fast forward to 2022, when Tom reconnected with an old friend and found something even more special. Jana Bennett, a longtime customer and proud 18th member of the Cooley Bay Wine Club, soon became the love of his life. After many events, wine tastings, and date nights, Tom and Jana tied the knot right on the patio at Cooley Bay in November 2022.
With new adventures on the horizon, Tom and Jana passed the torch in December 2024, selling Cooley Bay to its new owners, William and Jennifer Windlow.
William, a passionate home brewer of 20 years, brought his love of craft beer to Cooley Bay in the summer of 2025. Today, we proudly serve house-made beers, ciders, and meads alongside our beloved wines. Jennifer, with her creative spirit and dedication to hospitality, has added her own special touch—focusing on customer experience and community-centered entertainment.
Together, William and Jennifer bring more than two decades of community service, volunteering with organizations such as the Sherman Chamber of Commerce, CASA of Grayson County, Wilson N. Jones Foundation, The Rehabilitation Center of Sherman, Boys & Girls Club, and Texoma Soccer Association.
We are truly honored to carry forward the legacy that Tom, Jana, and Mark built—one glass at a time. Cooley Bay is more than just a winery; it’s a gathering place, a celebration of community, and a labor of love.
Thank you, Van Alstyne, for your continued support. We’re proud to be a part of this incredible hometown.
