What do you do when you have things you want, but you don’t have the funds to buy them? You either get another job or save, right? But what if you are only 13?
For Beckitt Lowe and Cohen McCreery, the answer was easy, start a business and earn their own money. In the summer of 2023, these two young entrepreneurs began with a loan of $350 to purchase their first push mower and a desire to grow their business. Fast forward three years and it is obvious they have been successful in every sense of the word. After their first season they used the profit to pay back their loan and then invest in purchasing their own riding mower to expand their budding business. Gray Wolf Workers is now in their third summer as a full lawn care business and also includes three part time employees who assist in caring for the 27 lawns they maintain all around Kendallville.
When asked why he chose to start his own business instead of applying for a job somewhere else, Beckitt shared, “My dad is an entrepreneur, and I didn’t want to work for someone else. It has been difficult to scale up the business and build it from the ground up, but the reward of choosing my own schedule is worth it!” Their goal for next summer is to increase the number of lawns by 48%, from 27 lawns to 40. Beckitt shared that this is one of the reasons they decided to join the Kendallville Area Chamber of Commerce. “I really feel that this is a unique opportunity that could benefit our business and connect us better with the community.”
These young men have had the support of their parents who initially had to help get the boys to some of their clients because they didn’t have drivers’ licenses at the beginning and also needed some assistance in setting up a bank account.
Beckitt’s grandpa used an old bed frame, recycled parts from a local dump, and donated tires from a local business to build a trailer for them as their fleet of lawnmowers grew. It has truly been a family investment in encouraging the success of Gray Wolf Workers.
