Six Decades of UCCU and Counting
It all began at Brigham Young University...
A lot of people dont know that UCCU was founded on the campus of Brigham Young University as the BYU Employees Federal Credit Union, a not-for-profit financial institution that was dedicated to the industry ideal of people helping people.
And the credit unions beginnings were extremely humble.
The founders couldnt afford to rent office space, so they set up a table on a stair landing in the Harold R. Clark building and took turns, voluntarily helping people in need of financial services. And because they couldnt afford to purchase a vault, cash was kept in a locked room and placed in a cast iron bathtub, covered with a sheet of asbestos to protect it from the fire.
But soon, word of this tiny credit union - a financial institution that valued people over profits spread. To families, friends, and neighbors throughout Utah Valley. And as the people of this community joined the cause, this credit union grew.
In 1977, the credit union opened its first official branch on Canyon Road in Provo, complete with safety deposit boxes, a fire-proof vault and the convenience of drive-up lanes. And it officially changed its name to Universal Campus Credit Union or UCCU for short.
Today, UCCU, now known as Utah Community Credit Union, serves well over 125,000 members and counting across Utah Valley and beyond.
And as we build toward a bright future, we look forward to many more decades of people helping people in Utah Valley!
